ecoPerth Forest

EcoPerth park is a small urban forest located right in the heart of Perth, on what had been a sloped area of little-used grass facing the Perth Basin. In April of 2002, it was converted to a “forest in the making”, using local indigenous species from the Ferguson Forest Centre in Kemptville. Volunteers planted 200 saplings and 500 seedlings, and will continue to nurture this forest of green and white ash, bur and red oak, black walnut, butternut, hard maple, white spruce, white pine, dogwood and hackberry. Within two years, all of the grass had disappeared, a lush understory had appeared, animals and birds had moved in and created homes, and the trees were growing faster than all our expectations. In another decade or so, there will be a usual backdrop of a lush forest to set off the "Crystal Palace".
